Frank Herbert published 22 novels between 1956 and 1988. This page lists them in first-book publication order, grouped by series, starting with Dune (1965).

Titles by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson stay out of the numbered Frank Herbert tables. Penguin Random House still packages only Herbert's six as the Dune series.

Scope: Every Frank Herbert novel with a first book edition from 1956 through 1988: 22 books, including Man of Two Worlds (1986, with Brian Herbert) and The Ascension Factor (1988, with Bill Ransom). The illustrated novella Direct Descent (1980) gets a standalone row and does not inflate the novel count. ConSentiency shorts, named collections, and four WordFire manuscripts (2012-2014) sit after the primary tables.

Excluded from numbered Frank tables: the 17 BH+KA Dune novels, The Dune Encyclopedia, Caedmon LPs, omnibuses, uncollected magazine shorts, and editor-only anthologies. The companion short "The Road to Dune" (1985, original to Eye) is not a seventh Dune novel. Chairdogs in ConSentiency and later Dune are trivia, not a crossover reading requirement. WordFire's four manuscripts and estate Dune sit after the primary tables, not as a fifth numbered series.

Books in Order by Series

Dune Books in Publication Order

Penguin Random House still sells these six as Dune series books 1-6. Publication order is reading order. Analog's "Dune World" and "The Prophet of Dune" serials were amalgamated into the 1965 novel; they are not extra books.

On r/dune, the recurring stall is after Children of Dune or at God Emperor of Dune. If you quit, quit after book 4. Books 5-6 are a second movement, not more of the first three.

Chronological alternative: the estate's chronological order places Frank's six as items 23, 28, and 30-33 among BH+KA novels and shorts. Start there only after the original six. Publication order stays the default; title spelling is in Order Conflicts.

Pandora / WorShip Books in Publication Order

Destination: Void is book 1, written solo. The next three are co-authored with Bill Ransom; trackers that start at The Jesus Incident dropped Void. WordFire packages the three Ransom sequels as the Pandora Sequence; that omnibus is not a fifth novel.

ConSentiency Books in Publication Order

Jorj X McKie works for BuSab. Two novels are preceded by two shorts later collected in Eye. Wikipedia's "followed by Eye" note on The Dosadi Experiment means the 1985 collection, not a sequel novel.

Standalone Novels

Soul Catcher is Herbert's only non-science-fiction novel on the estate author page; it stays in this table. The White Plague is a novel premise, not medical advice.

Collections

These are assemblies, not extra novels. The Best of Frank Herbert reprints excerpts of books already listed.

Posthumous Manuscripts

WordFire Press issued four previously unpublished manuscripts. List them after the 1956-1988 tables; do not back-date them into the 1950s-60s order. The omnibus Four Unpublished Novels (2016) collects these four, so skip it as a separate work.

Where New Readers Should Start

Start with Dune (1965). If the book holds you, read Dune Messiah (1969) and Children of Dune (1976) as the first movement.

If you are still in, continue through God Emperor of Dune (1981). Expect a form shift (smaller cast, longer argument, a jump in time), then Heretics of Dune and Chapterhouse: Dune.

Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson titles are a later, optional shelf. Never start a newcomer at The Butlerian Jihad.

For film-first readers, Dune and Dune Messiah cover the Villeneuve run through Dune: Part Three; the films are not the reading order. Dune also sits on Best Writing's sci-fi books list if you want adjacent titles.

Hunters of Dune and Sandworms of Dune claim to finish the Chapterhouse cliffhanger from Frank Herbert notes. Treat them as optional after the six. They are not Dune 7 and 8 in the Frank table.

Order Conflicts

Novel count. The lede is 22 novels, 1956-1988. Estate copy on dunenovels.com says "nearly 30 popular books and collections."

Franchise lists that say 23, 26, 30, or 48 mix serials, shorts, collections, and BH+KA into one pile. ISFDB plus the Herbert bibliography control the count here.

Dune Messiah year. First book is Putnam, October 1969 ($4.95 hardcover, 256 pp). The Berkley paperback (June 1970) is not first. Discard 1970 catalog years.

The Worlds of Frank Herbert. First book is New English Library, December 1970. Ace 1971 is the first American edition, expanded with a ninth story.

Berkley, not Berkeley. The publisher of several Herbert paperbacks is Berkley Books. Wikipedia's bibliography page misspells it "Berkeley."

Two works named "The Road to Dune." The 1985 story is original to Eye. The 2005 BH+KA volume is a different book. Never merge them.

Serials are not novels. "Dune World" and "The Prophet of Dune" became Dune; "Do I Wake or Dream?" became Destination: Void; "Project 40" became Hellstrom's Hive. Counting serials as extra books is how some catalogs hit 48.

Pandora numbering. Destination: Void is book 1. The Jesus Incident is book 2. Numbering that starts at The Jesus Incident is a tracker artifact.

God Emperor hyphen. Canonical US title is God Emperor of Dune, no hyphen. The chronology page and some Britannica hits use God-Emperor.

Chapterhouse punctuation. Canonical US title is Chapterhouse: Dune (colon). SFE notes the UK variant Chapter House Dune. The chronology page uses a semicolon.

The Godmakers. One novel. First-edition title The God Makers. Not the anti-Mormon film of a similar name.

Direct Descent. Illustrated novella/fix-up (Ace, 1980). Include the row. Do not call it the 23rd novel.

Angels' Fall. Wikipedia spelling Angels' Fall. SFE's Angel's Fall is the same manuscript.

The Dune Encyclopedia (McNelly, Berkley 1984) carried a November 1983 Frank Herbert foreword. The Herbert Limited Trust later declared it non-canon. It is not a Herbert novel.

BH+KA novels (optional, not numbered as Frank): seventeen in the ledger, Status=excluded from Frank's tables. SFE calls them "routine Sequels by Other Hands" that have "not seriously diminished the effect of the original series." Compact list, all optional after Frank's six:

Why Order Matters

Dune is a sequence of consequences. Starting at estate prequels (Butlerian Jihad, House Atreides, Caladan) puts later authors' backfill ahead of Herbert's own publication trail.

The later Dune novels change form. God Emperor of Dune is the documented fork: a coda to the first movement and a bridge into Heretics and Chapterhouse. Herbert died on 11 February 1986, so Chapterhouse: Dune closes mid-flight.

Outside Dune, order still decides what the book is. Destination: Void opens Pandora, so reading The Jesus Incident first hides that opening. ConSentiency shorts introduce BuSab before Whipping Star. The difference is Herbert's publication trail versus a franchise chronology built after 1999.
