Job Description

This associate editor will help some of our more than 2,000 expert contributors produce evergreen explainers and service journalism optimized for search. In close collaboration with our SEO analysts and audience development team, this editor will ensure consistent, high-quality digital journalism on the Forbes topics readers are searching for: business, careers, entrepreneurship, investing, leadership, media, luxury lifestyle, technology, travel and other related topics. The editor will also manage contributor workflow, track publish schedules and evaluate the performance of articles.

The associate editor will serve as the primary assignment editor, responsible for tasks such as contracts, assigning content briefs, reviewing delivered content and publishing on site. Additionally, they will act as the editor responsible for updating evergreen content as needed over time. This temporary position will report to the Assistant Managing Editor, Contributors and will be part of a team of editors who work closely with our contributors as well as the audience development, search, product, video, social and newsletter teams.

Responsibilities

  • Work with our audience and search teams to identify the most compelling opportunities for Forbes contributors to provide authoritative and actionable advice to job seekers, business leaders and curious readers
  • Assign and edit contributed content for publication
  • Use SEO tactics to ensure that evergreen explainers and service articles reach the widest possible audience
  • Analyze audience data for strategic decision-making and provide actionable guidance to contributors to ensure consistent output of high-quality explanatory and service journalism
  • Manage and track assignments and report on performance of editorial efforts to grow Forbes’ reach
  • Support contributors on audience development, new storytelling formats, and other publishing topics
  • Work with colleagues to support and train contributors to ensure that they are following best practices for ethical journalism and SEO, among other avenues for growth
  • Assist in recruiting and developing new contributors with diverse backgrounds, expertise and experiences, and help vet potential contributors
  • Collaborate with newsroom colleagues on projects and impactful coverage that is authentic to the Forbes brand

The Ideal Candidate

  • Unimpeachable news judgment, cool diplomacy skills and demonstrated expertise in SEO and other audience development tactics
  • Experience creating high-quality service journalism or news explainers
  • Expert line-editing skills with an ear for voice and the ability to provide editorial guidance to subject-matter experts
  • Experience project managing a team of freelancers or contributors on either an ongoing basis or project-by-project
  • Some background in multi-platform journalism, from working on newsletters and video series and podcasts to collaborating with data analysts and social media to increase audience and engagement is highly prized
  • At least three years professional journalism experience in a newsroom

The hourly rate for this role is $35.00 – $45.00

In determining this range, we consider the experience, level of education (if applicable to the role), knowledge, skills, and abilities required to be had by a successful candidate as well as the budget and the company’s pay rates, generally.
