FLSmidth is looking for a Senior Technical Writer to join our winning team.
JOB SUMMARY:
This position requires 50% work-from-office per week.
Senior Technical Writer will provide technical expertise, executing tasks under the supervision of a team lead or manager. Responsible for researching, developing, organizing, writing, editing, standardizing, and maintaining content for installation, operation, and maintenance manuals and other technical documents within the specified industry.
JOB SCOPE:
  • Trains, supports, and mentors less experienced team members
  • Identifies and addresses gaps in new and existing procedures and guidelines for the erection, assembly, installation, maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, and operation of FLSmidth-designed equipment
  • Builds working relationships with, and solicits technical feedback from internal (and when needed, external client-based) subject-matter experts to obtain and verify technical accuracy of FLSmidth documentation
  • Writes technical procedures, reports, and correspondence
  • Independently gathers and documents machine descriptions and system requirements with moderate to high complexity
  • Provides technical and copywriting assistance to internal and external stakeholders
  • Revises previously published materials, as directed
  • Creates and modifies illustrations for instruction manuals
  • Adheres to and contributes to the company style guide
  • Copy-edits, or comments on, the work of peers and co-workers during department training and collaboration sessions, or as assigned by the manager
  • Revises content according to department leadership’s editorial feedback
  • Observes and executes all job responsibilities in accordance with established company policies, procedures, and editorial standards
  • Independently manages individual documentation projects, and as assigned by the manager
  • Recommends and assists in implementing improvements to department business processes
  • Promotes a culture of personal and team safety, including others who may be affected by the company’s operational activities
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in technical communication, journalism, or English, or in a technical or scientific discipline with related writing experience
  • Eight to ten years of previous experience working as a technical writer
  • Candidates with an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
  • Demonstrated ability to write technical information clearly and concisely is required via writing samples or portfolio
  • Candidates with a background in a technical field preferred
  • Knowledge of standard procedures for the erection, installation, operation, maintenance, and relocation of mechanical equipment preferred
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
  • Speak and write fluent English
  • Read, analyze, and interpret technical information
  • Effectively present information to and respond to questions from managers, engineers, suppliers, clients, and customers
  • Effective interpersonal skills needed to communicate with co-workers, other departments, and customers
  • Fluency in other languages, such as Spanish, German, or French, is preferred, but not essential
REASONING ABILITY:
  • Solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists
  • Interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:
  • Ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings preferred
  • Ability to organize reference information logically and efficiently
  • Experience with Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Experience with desktop publishing software, such as Adobe FrameMaker, Adobe InDesign, and Acrobat Professional
  • Knowledge of content management systems preferred
  • Knowledge of structural mechanics, materials science, and materials capabilities preferred
  • Strong time-management skills to schedule and complete multiple assignments
  • Ability to work alone or as part of a team
  • Ability to complete detail-oriented work with minimal supervision
  • Ability to independently follow up on current and pending tasks
  • Ability and commitment to meet aggressive deadlines
