Job Description

Description

Based on an aggregation format, The Week distills and aggressively rewrites news, opinion, and ideas from the U.S. and international media to provide readers with “all they need to know about everything that matters.’’ The magazine’s coverage is broad, encompassing domestic and international news, politics, global commentary, and the latest developments in science, business, technology, arts, culture, and leisure.

Our writer/editors survey a wide range of sources to help determine the topics we write about each week, and turn large files of original news stories and commentaries into sharp, succinct, lively summaries for our busy readers. The emphasis is on making sense of the news by blending and contrasting the opinions of a variety of columnists from the left, right, and center. Our writing is not easy to do well.

What you’ll be doing…

The Week is looking for a smart, nimble writer with strong news experience for our national news and opinion magazine. The ideal candidate will be able to write quickly and engagingly, with substantial previous experience covering news. The Senior Editor will distill a broad range of news and opinion into sharp, succinct, and lively summaries in The Week’s distinctive style.

The responsibilities include:

  • Assessing the key news of the week in politics and culture to find the most important and engaging stories.
  • Sifting, blending, and contrasting the opinions of columnists from the left, right, and center to help readers make sense of the news.
  • Writing several articles for every issue in a format that values compression, clarity, wit, and brevity.
  • Explaining the news in a way that gives busy readers “all they need to know about everything that matters” with a strong emphasis on accuracy and non-partisanship.
  • Participating in the entire news team’s planning of how to cover the news.
  • Meeting tight deadlines in a fast-paced news organization.

Experience that will put you ahead of the curve…

  • Proven track record in news journalism to the highest standard
  • Ability to work at pace with appropriate sector knowledge and authority
  • Superb attention to detail and the ability to adapt to required values
  • The ability to work under pressure to tight deadlines
  • Excellent self-discipline, communication, organizational and time management skills

What’s in it for you…
