Job Description

The Senior Editor, News Analytics & Insights will help McClatchy’s News division meet its audience and mission goals by leading a team that uses audience data to help create and refine content strategies and inform daily content decisions made by our newsrooms. This position is part of the Platform Services team and reports up to the SVP, Strategy & Analytics, but works closely with senior News leadership and McClatchy’s newsroom leaders. The anticipated base pay range for this position is between 115k and 130k annually. Individual base pay may vary within that range depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, relevant education, department equity, training, geography, and local wage and hours laws. Essential Responsibilities Working with senior News leadership to find and implement actionable data-driven insights on story content and approach. Recommending and sometimes helping to direct data-driven content and platform experiments throughout the news division. Identifying tools and workflows to improve the depth and reliability of data required by the news division. Working with colleagues in analytics to ensure proper communication and alignment. Working with McClatchy’s News leadership to tie audience goals to business goals. Supervisory Responsibilities Oversee the day-to-day activities and performance of the News Analytics and Insights team. Supervise a staff that develops reports and dashboards to track organizational priorities and works with newsrooms on actionable insights for the news division. Provide guidance, mentorship, and support to team members, fostering an environment of continuous learning and growth. Establish clear goals, expectations, and performance metrics for the team, ensuring alignment with overall News and business objectives. Conduct regular performance reviews, providing constructive feedback and identifying opportunities for professional development. Lead the recruitment and hiring process for the Analytics and Insights team, ensuring that the team is staffed with top talent and well-equipped to meet the organization’s needs. Promote a culture of collaboration, innovation, and data-driven decision-making within the team and across the organization. Required Knowledge, Skills And Abilities A demonstrated ability to connect audience data with journalism and content decisions. An analytical thinker who can identify needs, draw conclusions from data and succinctly. explain to busy journalists how to act upon the conclusions. An ability to work across divisions and communicate clearly and effectively with company leadership as well as reporters and editors in our newsrooms. An ability to translate analytics into actionable, easily understood content strategy and tactics. Expertise in data analytics, statistical analysis, and data visualization techniques and tools. Proficiency in analytics tools and languages, such as SQL, Python, R and BI platforms (e.g., Tableau, Power BI). Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment. Education And Experience Bachelor’s degree in a related field (e.g., Journalism, Analytics, Business, or Economics) A minimum of 5 years of experience in analytics or data-driven roles. Demonstrated success in developing and implementing data-driven strategies within a multifaceted organization. Experience with newsroom content creation and distribution.
