Job Description

The context:

Across the developing world, more children than ever are in school – but they are not learning. A recent study estimated that less than 1% of school children in Sub-Saharan Africa attend a school where the teaching meets basic standards of quality. At Rising Academies, we’re changing that, and we want your help. Our mission is to create the best schools and the most powerful teaching and learning tools for the people that need it most. We’re one of the fastest-growing quality-focused education companies in Africa, and a Certified B Corp®.

About us:

We own and operate our own great value private schools, partner with governments to improve the quality of public school systems, and use our content and technology to help other education providers. Founded in Sierra Leone in 2014, we provided emergency education to children kept out of school by the Ebola Epidemic before opening our first school in April 2015. Today, we serve more than 250,000 students across more than 900 schools in Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ghana and now Rwanda.

Through great curriculum, intensive teacher coaching and actionable data, we help teachers and school leaders bring quality to every classroom. And we get results: independent studies show Rising students make more than twice the progress of their peers in comparable schools.

About the role:

We are seeking a skilled English Content Writer to join our Academics team at Rising Academies. The English Content Writer will play a key role in creating detailed and engaging English lesson plans. They will work with the Primary English Curriculum Lead to refresh our English Primary Curriculum across the schools we operate in. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of effective English lesson design for primary level students and, within the context of the countries we serve, will craft lesson content that enhances learning outcomes for students throughout our network.

The English Content Writer will:

  • Have a strong understanding of the Rising Approach to Teaching and Learning.
  • Plan highly effective and engaging English lessons from G1 – G6.
  • Work directly with the English Curriculum Lead and Head of Curriculum.
  • Ensure that Rising’s commitment to safeguarding is reflected in our curriculum.

Location and reporting:

This will be a remote role. We are open to hire someone for either full-time and part-time positions. The role reports to Rising’s English Curriculum Lead as well as the Head of Curriculum.

Application deadline:

The anticipated start date for this role is June 2024.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.
  • 3+ years of professional experience in teaching or curriculum / content creation.
  • Experience developing English, Phonics and Literacy lessons at primary level, preferably in multicultural settings.
  • Fully comfortable with Google workspace applications and easy to adapt to new systems easily.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to convey complex concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Experience working within a team.

About You:

  • You are a forward-thinking education professional with the ability to plan outstanding Phonics, Literacy and English lessons.
  • You have strong subject knowledge for literacy at primary level and experience in teaching the subject.
  • You have a strong understanding of teaching and learning strategies for English that enable you to plan outstanding lessons.
  • Your excellent communication skills enable you to articulate phonics and literacy concepts clearly and concisely, fostering understanding among diverse audiences.
  • You enjoy being part of a team working together to ensure outstanding outcomes for students across multiple countries in Africa.
  • You take initiative and problem-solve when challenges arise.
  • You are willing to take risks, fail, learn, give and receive feedback, and try new approaches.
  • You are passionate about improving the quality of education across Africa.
