Job Description

Job Description

In this role, you will be responsible for the delivery of content validation through researching international experts suitable to act as peer reviewers for cutting-edge research, and desk assessment of submissions to ensure compliance with the Taylor and Francis editorial policies. The successful candidate will report to the Lead – Content Review and will join a team of Content Review Editors.

This is a fantastic role for an individual with exceptional attention to detail, a proactive approach to process improvement and problem-solving and a real passion for supporting the peer review process. You will be managing sensitive and complex stakeholder relationships including authors, editors, suppliers, and colleagues, so excellent communication skills are also essential. We offer excellent training and development opportunities as part of a friendly and collaborative global team environment.

Given the nature of the subject matter involved these roles would suit individuals with a Post Graduate background in Biomedical Sciences, Life Sciences or Physical Sciences & Engineering subjects as you will be required to understand the scientific context of the articles for which you are supporting.

What you will be doing:

  • Managing the peer review process to agreed speed and quality targets for Taylor & Francis journals with a focus on upholding team and department best practices, effective operation of peer review systems, and accurate data management & record keeping.
  • Using internal and external databases to research, select and invite appropriate reviewers. Ensure oversight of the reviewer selection service delivery on your assigned portfolio of journals through collaboration with the vendor operatives and T&F supplier management team.
  • Desk assessment of submissions through conducting comprehensive editorial checks, including the suitability of submissions to the journal, adherence to ethics and integrity best practices, and ensuring compliance with the Taylor and Francis editorial policies.
  • Assessing articles as required for image quality and identifying any related concerns.
  • Effective liaison with authors, reviewers, academic editors, and internal editorial teams on manuscript completion requirements, peer review timelines, and standard queries to ensure seamless movement of manuscripts through the peer review process.
  • Managing the quality of the reviewer selection and desk assessment services delivery through problem-solving, data analysis, recognising process improvement opportunities, effective feedback and liaising with the Global Peer Review team.
  • Staying up to date with internal and external guidelines on ethical publication practices.
  • Providing excellent and empathic customer service and managing internal and external stakeholder expectations.
  • Providing project support where required, including supervision of and reporting on test journals, and actively collaborating within Global Peer Review, and with wider T&F Researcher Services departments.
  • Providing support for training, meetings, and workshops by participating, organising and collating meeting notes as required.
  • Handling confidential information sensitively with consideration for the legal and ethical issues that may arise due to mishandling.
  • Managing your learning, taking responsibility to identify and develop skills gaps and actively sharing knowledge.

Qualifications

What are we looking for:

  • A post-graduate qualification in Biomedical Sciences, Life Sciences, Physical Science or Engineering subjects
  • Prior experience working in academic publishing and on peer review processes for journals will be desirable.
  • An interest and awareness of academic publishing and an up-to-date knowledge of market trends
  • Confident communication skills (emails, phone, and in-person) with a strong command of English spelling and grammar
  • Knowledge and experience in process-driven workflows
  • Experience working in a customer-facing role
  • Ability to be detail-oriented, accurate, and a problem-solver
  • Excellent organization skills and confidence in completing multiple tasks to deadlines
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills and a desire to provide excellent customer service
  • Ability to recognize process improvement opportunities
  • Good persuasion and influencing skills, showing empathy for others’ viewpoints
  • Flexibility to adjust to changes in work plans or assignments
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office software

Some experience with online submission platforms like ScholarOne™ or Editorial Manager® would be advantageous, although full training is available.
