Job Description

Job Description

What will the role involve?

As a Deputy Sports Editor, you will be a member of a key team, crucial to growing an exciting part of Reach Plc’s expansion, with a focus on a variety of US sports including the NCAA and US Soccer. You will deputize for members of the news desk by editing copy and assigning stories to reporters as required, and will be responsible for page view and audience growth targets.

As a senior member of the team, you will attend planning meetings to coordinate our coverage of major upcoming sporting events. As a result of this you may then be required to head out on assignments, so you must be comfortable and confident to use your knowledge to operate independently whilst on the road. You will conduct interviews with key contacts, whether in person or virtually, and build relationships and trust in the industry.

You will deliver a fast turnaround on major sports news stories across the US and around the world and bring in exclusive stories that set us apart from our rivals.

Shift Patterns

This is an office based role working from our New York office, we are therefore open to candidates based in or commutable to New York.

Shifts are done on a rolling rota basis, and rotas should be updated approximately 1 month in advance. The working hours for this position will be:

Early – 10:00am – 6:00pm EST

Late – 4:00pm – 12:00am EST

However, this is subject to change depending on team availability and as a result of current sports news affairs, and so we therefore require a level of flexibility in this role. Any shifts ending after 9:00pm EST will have the flexibility to be completed remotely.

Weekend shifts are also required due to the nature of the role, however you will receive days back in lieu as a result.

Qualifications

Who are we looking for?

You are digitally savvy with an acute attention to detail and previous experience of working in an editorial role within a news organization. You are comfortable working in a fast paced environment, with experience in the field and the ability to find exclusives that set us apart from our competitors.

You will be able to demonstrate a passion and knowledge of US sports, with previous experience in covering the NCAA and US Soccer highly desirable.

Importantly, you are an excellent communicator and leader who is capable of inspiring and motivating a team, and who can demonstrate a detailed understanding of the US media landscape.

You must feel comfortable being sent out on assignment, potentially involving overnight stays on occasion, to cover the US’ biggest sport stories and events. You must be able to work flexibly, as this role involves shift work that includes evenings and weekends.
