Job Description

We are seeking a COPYWRITER to join the Orvis Team! This is a remote position with potential travel to our home office in Vermont once per year. The Copywriter, Cross Category, is a humble, hungry, ever-curious, and versatile creative, who brings our brand’s passion and power to inspire a love of nature to life through the written word. Obsessed with authenticity in the category, this writer takes the pursuit of learning to new levels while leaping from digital to retail to print and back around again effortlessly, infusing the Brand Voice into every customer touchpoint. For more than 165 years the Orvis name has stood for outdoor traditions, quality, and customer satisfaction. At Orvis, we do not sell what we, ourselves, would not be proud to own or give as a gift. Our associates deserve to be proud of our service and our products, and we rely on every associate to apply our “pride of ownership” credo to drive our quality. “Good enough” is not our standard. We need to strive for perfection in our products and customer service, to propel our growth and the pride that will fuel our team. Position Interfaces: As part of Orvis’ Internal Agency, Flybox, this role reports directly to the Senior Copy Manager, with no direct reports, and will collaborate with Flybox copywriters, designers and content creators, as well as cross-functional partners in Brand Marketing, Product Marketing, and Merchandising. Responsibilities: Develop on-brand copy and concepts (inspired by our Brand Vision and Values) across all digital (email, social, eCommerce), retail, and print/catalog marketing channels across all Orvis categories. Support Senior Copywriters by writing copy and concepting campaign ideas in response to marketing briefs or requested editorial and product copy needs for orvis.com and our catalogs. Maintain an ongoing dialogue with category Marketers and Merchants to ensure all product and brand messaging is fact-based and up to date in an ever-changing product development environment. Work with the Senior Manager in the ongoing application of the Orvis brand voice in this category. Build cross-team relationships and work closely with digital and catalog teams to coordinate the efficient delivery of our best creative expressions through proactive, continuous communication. Competencies and Requirements: Deep love for the outdoors and our responsibility to leave the campsite better than we found it. 3-5 years of copywriting experience (portfolio required), must have experience writing for digital. Ability to react constructively, collaborating with writers and key partners on editorial changes. Clear, honest, timely, good-natured communicator—in writing and in conversation. Extreme attention to details. Ability to self-project-manage—a well-organized juggler keeping many balls in the air, who wouldn’t even think of missing a deadline. Experience with apparel/pet-related eCommerce brands a plus. Experience with outdoor, adventure, and/or adventure travel brands/publications an even bigger plus. Bachelor’s degree in Creative Writing, English, Journalism, Advertising or similar field. Orvis Company associates take pride in our world-class service and products, treating customers, vendor partners, and each other with integrity and mutual respect. We work in a supportive, team-oriented environment, focusing on performance, continuous improvement, and exceeding our customers’ expectations – both internal and external. The Orvis Company and our associates are committed to giving back to our communities and protecting nature. About Orvis: In 1856, Charles Orvis founded the Orvis Company in Manchester, Vermont, offering the finest fly fishing equipment, and priding himself on customer satisfaction and service. Today, along with our world famous fly-fishing gear, Orvis offers distinctive clothing, home furnishings, gifts, and dog products. Each item is rooted in our heritage of authenticity and the outdoors, and is backed with a no-questions-asked guarantee. As the longest-running mail order business in the United States, and with our flagship retail store located in the same Vermont village as the original store since 1856, we offer experience and knowledge that no other retail company can. Each day we strive to apply what we know and learn to bring our customers even better service and products tomorrow. Orvis is headquartered in beautiful Southwestern Vermont with major operations in Roanoke, Virginia and the U.K. We firmly believe that the only way for Orvis to achieve its vision to be the most respected lifestyle brand in America, is to have a company culture that is supportive and inspiring to the individuals that will get us there. Orvis offers competitive compensation commensurate with scope of responsibilities and experience required; plus a comprehensive benefits package including medical/dental/vision coverage, life insurance, 401K, generous associate discounts, and other excellent benefits.
