Housing, real estate and development comings and goings are some of the top topics our readers care about. With a population of 1 million, the Austin and Central Texas area boasts a dynamic business climate. Austin has become the new Silicon Valley as hundreds of companies and thousands of tech workers call our vibrant state capital home. Austin is the headquarters of Tesla and the Boring Co., Dell, Oracle, AMD, Whole Food and Bumble. Google, Meta (Facebook), Apple, Amazon and Samsung have major presence in our region. Austin is a tech startup haven and home to scores of venture capitalists but also has a vibrant small-business and minority business environment that continues to grow. In Austin, creativity is often rewarded with funding and we want to tell those stories. The successful candidate must be a skilled editor who can collaborate with reporters to elevate their story pitches, reporting and writing. The candidate must have a sense of urgency to mobilize staff to stay on top of news developments and the drive to hold those in power accountable. Finding ways to write those stories so they connect to the understanding of the overall region is a must. A strong understanding of audience metrics, engagement tactics, and search engine optimization is necessary to help grow the newspaper’s digital audience. Responsibilities: Coach reporters to produce a steady stream of breaking news, enterprise, explanatory and investigative pieces. Accelerate the urgency, digital-first acumen among your staff. Work with the content strategist and digital team members to ensure that topics and issues most important to key audiences are covered. Monitor real-time metrics to develop a clear picture of audience needs. Work collaboratively with other editors to produce relevant content using innovative approaches. Requirements: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in communications, journalism or related field preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience. More than five years of media management experience. Proven proficiency in applying analytics to content strategy. Strong communication and collaboration skills. Exposure to deadline-driven environment. Exceptional planning and organizational skills. Social-media and SEO knowledge. Self-motivation and self-direction. Strong line-editing skills. Strong people-management skills. Strong problem-solving skills. Creativity and out-of-the-box thinking.
