Job Description

Do you care about where you live and want to be a part of a passionate team who cares as well? The Michigan Municipal League believes our communities play a critical role in all our lives. We believe in vibrant downtowns, great parks, strong local services, and creating the places we all want to live and work in. We believe strong communities have the power to support economic and social opportunities for all residents, including traditionally marginalized groups. If this sounds like something you believe in too, then our association might be the place for you.

The Michigan Municipal League (the League) is seeking a Content Writer to join our team. The approximate starting salary range for this position is $53,000 to $58,000, depending on qualifications. The selected candidate will contribute to the success of the League’s marketing and communications efforts with their deep passion for communication and application of their skills to a range of content types and channels. Our ideal candidate is a self-starter who thrives in a fast-paced environment, is willing to take on new challenges, contributes to big ideas, and executes on supporting tactics. A sense of humor will come in handy as well as a willingness to jump in to do what’s needed (we all do!)

If you were working for us, here are just some of the things you would do (with or without a reasonable accommodation):

  • Write, proofread, and edit.
  • Serve as an integral part of our Marketing and Communications team and contribute to communication assets, including press releases, one-pagers, articles, email and web copy, brochures, and blogs.
  • Draft content that promotes our many events, programs, and initiatives.
  • Manage projects that contribute to an overall communications campaign.
  • Edit content for grammar, syntax, League voice, and editorial and brand compliance.
  • Help us spread the word about the importance of League initiatives and programs.
  • Write, proofread, and edit some more.

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • Education or technical training equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, English, or related field.
  • Three or more years of professional experience in a similar role. Previous experience working with non-profits and/or local government will be helpful.
  • Writing examples that demonstrate your range.
  • Strong proofreading and editing skills that can adapt to new and multiple style guides.
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and close attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities with a high sense of urgency to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative, and efficiently plan, organize, and implement work priorities.
  • Ability to learn new skillsets and master new technologies.
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with different personalities and individuals at all levels.
  • Ability to live in Michigan to support the great state we represent.

About Us:

The Michigan Municipal League is a non-profit association and member organization of 500+ cities, villages and urban townships dedicated to making Michigan’s communities better by thoughtfully innovating programs, energetically connecting ideas and people, actively serving members with resources and services, and passionately inspiring positive change for Michigan’s communities. Through advocacy at the state and federal level, we proactively represent municipalities to help them sustain highly livable, desirable, and unique places within the state. We create and offer services and events to our members in order to help educate and inspire them to remain focused on their passion for the areas they represent. Our Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion:

The League is an equal opportunity employer that cares deeply about diversity, equity, and inclusion and is committed to creating a welcoming workplace for all.

Our commitment to DEI is born out of respect and admiration for the rich and vibrant composition of our members, the family of communities in Michigan. As the association representing these communities with one voice, we know that voice is strong because of the unique gifts and perspectives each possess. That is why we celebrate differences and work to create systems and practices that ensure inclusivity and equity while rejecting and dismantling those that propagate discord and division. This is a duty we proudly accept. We will continue to resource our efforts by shaping our organization and culture to reflect our DEI commitment and values, something we believe is a mindset first and milestone second.

Here’s What We Have to Offer:

We are looking for people who believe in our mission to help communities around the state. In return, we offer a stable, energetic, and fun atmosphere to support your work and career growth. In fact, we’ve received awards for our people-first culture!

In addition to being such a great place to work, the League also offers a flexible work environment, including remote work options and a generous approach to paid time off. We also offer a competitive benefits package, including platinum-level health insurance plans, retirement savings plans with a generous employer match, and a variety of other benefit offerings.
